Mi chiamo Viacheslav Danh, conosciuto anche come Suan. Sono ucraino, ora residente a Los Angeles. What’s your story?
My name is Viacheslav Danh, also known as Suan. I’m a tattoo artist from Ukraine, now based in Los Angeles. I specialise in black and grey realism, using whip shading to achieve intricate detail and texture. My work is deeply influenced by classical art, mythology, and religious themes, and I strive to blend timeless elegance with modern execution in every piece I create.

I tuoi tatuaggi realistici black & grey sono famosi per i loro dettagli intricati e la loro profondità emotiva. Cosa ti ha attirato inizialmente in questo stile e come si è evoluto il tuo approccio?
Inizialmente ero semplicemente attratto dalla capacità dei tatuaggi black & grey di trasmettere emozioni attraverso il contrasto e le ombreggiature sottili. Con il tempo, ho capito che la tecnica dell'ombreggiatura a frusta mi permetteva di superare i limiti del dettaglio e della texture. È diventata il fulcro del mio stile: fondere il realismo con la struttura grafica e dare a ogni tatuaggio una sensazione scultorea.

Your black and grey realism tattoos are renowned for their intricate detail and emotional depth. What initially drew you to this style, and how has your approach evolved?
Initially, I was drawn to the ability of black and grey tattoos to convey emotion through contrast and subtle shading. Over time, I realised that the whip shading technique allowed me to push the limits of detail and texture. It became the core of my style, blending realism with graphic structure and giving each tattoo a sculptural feel.

Essendo tu ucraino, in che modo il tuo retroterra culturale ha influenzato la tua visione artistica e i temi che esplori nel tuo lavoro?
Crescendo in Ucraina, sono stato circondato da un mix di estetica dell'Europa orientale e profondità storica. Sono sempre stato affascinata dall'arte realizzata a mano e dall'artigianato dettagliato. Questo apprezzamento si è evoluto in una passione per le sculture classiche, le forme architettoniche e l'iconografia religiosa, che hanno trovato naturalmente spazio nei miei lavori di tatuaggio.

Being from Ukraine, how has your cultural background influenced your artistic vision and the themes you explore in your work?
Growing up in Ukraine, I was surrounded by a mix of Eastern European aesthetics and historical depth. I’ve always been fascinated by handmade art and detailed craftsmanship. That appreciation evolved into a passion for classical sculptures, architectural forms, and religious iconography, which naturally found their way into my tattoo work.

Potresti illustrarci il tuo processo creativo, dall'idea iniziale al tatuaggio finale? Come ti assicuri che ogni pezzo risuoni sia con te che con il tuo cliente?
Inizia con una conversazione. Mi prendo del tempo per capire la visione del cliente, il suo background e l'emozione che c'è dietro al pezzo. Poi inizio a disegnare idee che si adattino all'anatomia del cliente e che migliorino la narrazione. Per me si tratta di creare un disegno equilibrato che sia personale per il cliente ma che sia in linea con il mio stile artistico.

Could you walk us through your creative process—from the initial concept to the final tattoo? How do you ensure each piece resonates with both you and your client?
It begins with a conversation. I take time to understand the client’s vision, background, and emotion behind the piece. Then, I start sketching ideas that flow with the client’s anatomy and enhance storytelling. For me, it’s about creating a balanced design that’s personal to them but still aligns with my artistic style.

Molti dei tuoi tatuaggi catturano magnificamente le sottigliezze della luce e dell'ombra. Quali tecniche o strumenti utilizzi per ottenere un tale realismo?
L'ombreggiatura a frusta è la tecnica su cui faccio più affidamento. Si tratta di una serie di movimenti controllati e ampi che utilizzano un ago a tre punte, che mi permettono di creare gradienti, simulare la luce e migliorare la texture. Mi dà la flessibilità di enfatizzare la profondità mantenendo un'elevata precisione.

Many of your tattoos capture the subtleties of light and shadow beautifully. What techniques or tools do you employ to achieve such realism?
Whip shading is the technique I rely on most. It involves a series of controlled, sweeping motions using a 3-round liner needle, allowing me to build gradients, simulate light, and enhance texture. It gives me the flexibility to emphasise depth while maintaining high precision.
